Great success of the V Workshop on Disruptive Information and Communication Technologies for Innovation and Digital Transformation.

The V Workshop on Disruptive Information and Communication Technologies for Innovation and Digital Transformation was held on 12 September. This was carried out in the framework of the DISRUPTIVE project.

The workshop on Disruptive Information and Communication Technologies for Innovation and Digital Transformation aimed to discuss the issues, challenges and benefits of using disruptive digital technologies, namely the Internet of Things, Big Data, cloud computing, multi-agent systems, machine learning, virtual and augmented reality, and collaborative robotics, to support the ongoing digital transformation in society.

In addition, this workshop not only had a plenary focus, but also sought to train companies and SMEs, so that they can take away added value and assess the possibility of becoming more involved in this much-needed digital transformation and for which Castilla y León can offer them means and aid.

The training activity was held at the Centro de Soluciones Empresariales de la Junta de Castilla y León, Arroyo de la Encomienda, Valladolid, in person and via Streaming, where the event could be followed.

Course - Introduction to optical communications networks

The DISRUPTIVE project, as part of its training activities, is organising the course "Introduction to Optical Communications Networks". The course will be held in person and in Spanish, for a maximum of 30 participants.

This training will be given by Dr. Ramón J. Durán Barroso, Dr. Ignacio de Miguel, Dr. Noemí Merayo and Dr. Juan Carlos Aguado, Professors of the University of Valladolid (UVA).

The registration period will be open from 06/09/2022 until 08/09/2022 and will be done through following form.

Participation is free and in person, subject to prior registration due to the limited number of places available.

This training will be held in person on 13 September from 9:00 to 12:00 in classroom 9 of the ETS of Telecommunications Engineering of the University of Valladolid. Paseo de Belén, 15. Valladolid (Spain). The following topics will be taught:

  • Introduction to optical communications systems.
  • Passive optical access networks.
  • Transport and metropolitan networks based on optical fibre.

This course does not have any requirements for participation. The target audience is students of electrical engineering and related fields, as well as enthusiasts and those interested in the development of electronic projects.

Course - Fundamentals of supervised machine learning

The DISRUPTIVE project, as part of its training activities, is organising the course "Fundamentals of Supervised Machine Learning". The course will be held in blended mode and in Spanish, with two face-to-face sessions and a part of autonomous work of the students, up to a maximum of 10 assistants.

The course will be open to everyone and will provide knowledge on the introduction to machine learning, generalisation theory, regularisation and validation techniques, linear and non-linear models, neural networks, support vector machines (SVM) and decision trees. 

This training will be given by Dr. Ignacio de Miguel y Dr. Ramón J. Durán Barroso, , both Full Professors at the University of Valladolid (UVA).

The registration period will be open from 15/07/2022, at 14:00 hours, until full capacity is reached and will be done through the following form.

The course has a duration of 30 hours, which will be distributed as follows: 

  • 10 face-to-face hours distributed in 2 sessions: 18 and 19 July 2022 from 9:00 to 14:00 at the ETSI of Telecommunications of the University of Valladolid. 
  • 20 hours of independent work. The delivery of the exercises will be on 12 September 2022.

The event has the following requirements: 

  • Basic knowledge of Python programming and mathematics at first year level of engineering, science or economics/business degrees.
  • Have a computer equipment to follow the course (preferably a laptop to take it to the classroom sessions).
  • Installation of the ANACONDA software (https://www.anaconda.com). Anaconda is a distribution of the Python programming language for data science, machine learning, large-scale data processing, etc., which aims to simplify the management and deployment of packages.

Course - Introduction to Python programming for data analysis

The DISRUPTIVE project, as part of its training activities, is organising the course: "Introduction to Python programming for data analysis".  The course will be held entirely online and in Spanish, with a maximum number of 20 attendees. The course will be given by Dr. Ramón J. Durán Barroso, Professor at the  University of Valladolid (UVA).

In order to offer flexibility to the students, a tutorial has been developed using Jupyter Notebooks. Students must follow the tutorial by doing the exercises on the notebooks and will always have the teacher of the subject at their disposal via e-mail or videoconferences to solve any doubts.

This training will take place from 27 June to 15 July. Each student can organise his or her time to suit his or her schedule.

The registration period will be open from 14/06/2022 to 27/06/2022 and can be done through the following from.

The course has a duration of 20 hours divided into four online units, distributed as follows:

  • Introduction to Python (10 hours)
  • Numpy (4 hours)
  • MatPlotLib (2 hours)
  • Pandas (4 hours)

The event has the following requirements for participation:

  • The student must have basic notions of programming.
  • The student must have a computer equipment to follow the course.
  • The student must be able to install the ANACONDA software (https://www.anaconda.com). All the packages that will be used in the course can be found in the basic installation of ANACONDA.

Mentoring "Embedded Systems and IoT”

The DISRUPTIVE project, integrated in its training activities, organizes the mentoring: "Embedded Systems and IoT". This course will enable participants to develop notions of embedded systems as a fundamental competence for the use of sensors and gateways to monitor ageing and transport data to internal and external communication networks.

The event will take place on 18 May 2022 from 9:00 to 18:00 WET (Lisbon-PT). The actions include a theoretical training component, as well as experimentation and exploration activities.

Participation is free of charge and in person, subject to prior registration due to the limited number of places available. This event will take place in Porto (Portugal).

Course - Printed Circuit Board (PCBs) design with the KiCad Platform

As part of its training activities, the DISRUPTIVE project is organising the course: "Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design with the KiCad platform".

PCBs are essential for the development of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and their correct design is important for these devices to comply with industrial standards. In this context, this course will introduce the main concepts and project rules for the design and manufacturing of printed circuit boards, with emphasis on the development of practical applications using the KiCad development platform.

The course has a duration of 8 hours divided into four online units of two hours each, distributed as follows:

The videoconference will be held by Zoom. Instructors include specialist engineers Eberton Matia and Fábio Amaral, and IPB (Instituto Politécnico de Bragança) researchers Alexandre Júnior and Matheus Zorawski.

Training programme:

  • Introduction of the main concepts and methodologies for the design and development of PCBs.
  • Presentation and use of the KiCad platform for the project and design of PCBs.
  • Project rules and technical specifications on electromagnetic aspects and proper distribution of components on the PCB.
  • Theoretical aspects, standards, technical specifications and good practices for the soldering of PTH and SMD components.
  • Development of practical activities, using the concepts and platform presented.

Knowledge of basic electronics is a requirement for participation in the event. The target audience are students of electrical engineering and related areas, as well as enthusiasts and those interested in the development of electronic projects.

2nd Hackathon on Cybersecurity for IoT-based applications – a CTF competition

The DISRUPTIVE project, as part of its training activities, is organizing the 2nd edition of the Hackathon on Cybersecurity for IoT-based applications - a CTF competition. With the wide adoption of IoT devices and the increasing demand for IoT-based applications, the fast development and deployment of such applications by companies lead to non proper checking for cybersecurity issues and vulnerabilities.

In this hackathon, the participants will be challenged in a Capture The Flag (CTF) competition to gain and apply some basic security skills to solve different challenges related to security aspects of IoT-based applications. This aims to present some of the main cybersecurity aspects to support the development of more secure IoT-based applications. It will cover aspects related to cryptography, penetration test, web exploitation and forensics.

The hackathon will take place on 03/05/2022 (from 9h00 to 18h00).

The hackathon will be held in IPB (Instituto Politécnico de Bragança). The instructors include the researchers from IPB: Tiago Pedrosa, Jorge Loureiro, Gustavo Funchal and Alexandre Júnior.

Program:

The hackathon is intended for undergraduate students of the area of Computer Science and cybersecurity enthusiasts. Requirements: basic knowledge on linux commands and programming skills. Up to four participants per team. The participants must go to the hackathon with a PC or Virtual Machine with Kali Linux distribution or other with cybersecurity related tools.

Large audience at the Cybersecurity Hackathon: Applications based on IoT CTF

The Hackathon on Cybersecurity: Applications based on IoT CTF took place on 25 March 2022. It was held in the framework of the DISRUPTIVE project as part of its training activities. The hackathon was attended by a large number of participants who faced different challenges related to cybersecurity.

The objective was to consider key areas of cybersecurity for the development of more secure IoT-based applications. Aspects related to cryptography, penetration testing, web exploitation and forensics were covered. In addition, participants faced a Capture The Flag (CTF) competition to gain and apply some basic security skills to solve different challenges related to the security aspects of IoT-based applications.

He hackathon was held at the facilities of the BISITE research group, so participants had access to all the materials they needed during the course of the event. Different researchers from the BISITE group of the University of Salamanca and CeDRI (IPB - Instituto Politécnico de Bragança), acted as instructors at the event.

Successful IoT Hackathon: New digital horizon

On 18 March, the Hackathon on IoT: New digital horizon took place successfully in the framework of the DISRUPTIVE project. It was attended by a large number of participants, who designed and developed several challenges on the Internet of Things. 

The hackathon was held at the facilities of the BISITE research group, so that they had access to all the materials they needed during the event. The instructors of this event were different researchers from the BISITE group of the University of Salamanca.

The objective of this day was to participate in a multidisciplinary team made up of students from different faculties in order to collaborate in certain developments in the Internet of Things and to disseminate the DISRUPTIVE project. These actions are framed in the project as a component of theoretical training, as well as experimentation and exploration activities.

Hackathon in IoT: New digital horizon

The DISRUPTIVE project, as part of its training activities, is organizing the Hackathon in IoT: New digital horizon. Today, most of the electronic devices around us are connected. In the near future, objects, devices and appliances will "talk" to each other, sharing valuable data and information to make our lives easier.

PRODUTECH organizes a mentoring action on Machine Learning in the scope of the cross-border project DISRUPTIVE provided by Fraunhofer Portugal

In the scope of the cross-border project DISRUPTIVE - Dinamización de los Digital Innovation Hubs dentro de la región PocTep para el impulso de las TIC disruptivas y de última generación a través de la cooperación en la región transfronteriza - of which PRODUTECH is a partner, a mentoring session on "Introduction to Machine Learning", organized by PRODUTECH, took place on March 4th, in an in-person format, provided by the scientists of Fraunhofer Portugal Research Association, and with a duration of 8 hours.

The initiative was attended by 15 representatives of companies, R&D institutions and national clusters and had as main objectives:

- To provide an introduction to Machine Learning (ML) and the most used methods and tools in supervised and unsupervised learning and the exploration of ML applications for real cases from the business world.

- To equip participants with basic ML concepts and teach them how to set up a Machine Learning framework.

- Demonstrate how Artificial Intelligence can help create algorithms to support the running of a company, making use of the participants' prior business knowledge and business information.

Two new mentoring sessions, free of charge and dedicated to other topics, will follow this first one:

  • 22 of April, IoT and Industry 4.0
  • 18 of May, Embedded Systems and IoT

Cyber security Hackathon: IoT-based applications CTF

The DISRUPTIVE project, as part of its training activities, is organizing the Hackathon in cyber security – IoT-based applications - a CTF competition. Course on "Introduction to exploratory data analysis in R"

The DISRUPTIVE project, as part of its training activities, is organising the course: "Introduction to exploratory data analysis in R". This course will use the R language and the RStudio platform for the exploration, processing and analysis of data, with the aim of generating reports and graphs.

The registration period will be open from 08 to 18 February 2022 and must be done through the following.

The course will be taught by researcher Fernando Feijoo from the University of Burgos and researchers Alexandre Júnior and Jonas Queiroz from the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança.

The course has a total duration of 5 hours divided into three online units, which will be developed through sessions on the Zoom Meeting platform, according to the following training programme: 

Unit-1 (21 February 2022, from 5 to 7 pm WET [Lisbon-PT]):

  • Introduction to the R language and the RStudio platform: main concepts and advantages of the R language, installation and familiarisation with the RStudio environment.
  • Introduction to graphics generation.

Unit-2 (22 February 2022, from 17:00 to 18:30 WET [Lisbon-PT]):

  • Introduction to dataframe transformation.
  • Development of practical activities related to the generation of graphs.

Unit-3 (23 February 2022, from 17:00 to 18:30 WET [Lisbon-PT]):

  • Use of markdown language to generate reports.
  • Development of practical activities on dataframe transformation, charting and report generation.

The course is aimed at students and professionals in the fields of engineering, computer science, finance, management and precision agriculture, who are interested in or work with data analysis. No previous knowledge of programming is required. Language: Spanish/Portuguese.

New stay of a researcher at ISEP

Javier Parra, researcher at the University of Salamanca (USAL), has made a new stay thanks to the DISRUPTIVE project at the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), where he has worked on the corresponding disruptive advances related to Big Data and in the field of IoT.

IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM)

Great reception of the DISRUPTIVE project at the internationally relevant IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM). The event took place from 7th to 11th December 2021 at IFEMA with the slogan "Connecting cultures around the world".

The DISRUPTIVE project had a space where it had the opportunity to give visibility to the project and everything achieved with it in front of more than 3000 researchers, who gathered in a hybrid format and reached the whole world. One of the main objectives of GOBLECOM 2021 is to promote innovation to showcase the latest advances in artificial intelligence, communications and networks, 5G, 6G, internet of things and Big Data, among others.

Special Session on Disruptive Information and Communication Technologies for Innovation and Digital Transformation (DISRUPTIVE)

On October 8th, a workshop of the DISRUPTIVE project will take place online within a Special Session of the 17th edition of the "International Conference on Distributed Computing and Artificial Intelligence 2020" (DCAI).

Among the topics to be discussed in this workshop are the Industry 4.0 and the digital transformation, the Internet of things, cyber security, collaborative robotics, Edge and Cloud computing, multiagent systems, virtual and augmented reality, Big Data, among others. All of these are disruptive digital technologies that support the digital transformation of society.
